Exhibition «Les Aliénés du Mobilier National, le retour»
For the second time, Mobilier National has entrusted around thirty contemporary artists with furniture from the collections of the ex Garde-Meuble Royal that was destined for disposal, in order to give it a new lease of life. Marie chose to transform a Second Empire dressing table.

Marie Berthouloux worked on striking a balance between the past of this piece of furniture—its aesthetics and its use—and the desire to grow wild herbs and hybrid plants where the embroidery would not be fixed but moving and creeping.
She imagined climbing embroidery, invading this abandoned piece of furniture. This whimsical vegetation, reflecting her history, emanates from its precious marble.

As it was too bulky, attempts were made to sell it. Without success. It was catalogued and labeled. It became a number. The artist’s wish was to illustrate the journey of this dressing table and the different statuses it was given.
Its number and labels then become textile jewelry.
Its role as a utilitarian object disappears and it becomes an object of contemplation and imagination.
Weeds, mutant and whimsical weeds take over the dressing table. They adorn it, repair it, and hybridize it like weeds that find their way between two paving stones, in the hollow of a crack in the asphalt.
